On pickup, remove 2 cards from your deck.

Rating & Analysis

Empty Cage lets you immediately remove 2 cards from your deck — unglamorous but highly reliable. Players who value deck compression rate it very highly.

Value of Removing 2 Cards

  • In STS2, Shop card removal can only be done one card at a time and gets progressively more expensive
  • Removing 2 cards at once saves the Gold and action of two Shop visits — a strong tempo gain
  • Removing starter cards (Strikes and Defends) immediately raises deck quality
  • You choose exactly which cards to remove, so you can target the worst cards precisely

Removal Priority

  1. Strike variants — useful early but outclassed by better Attacks mid-run
  2. Defend variants — unnecessary once Block-focused Skills are established
  3. Off-strategy cards — remove cards that don't fit the build to tighten deck cohesion
  4. Curses / Status cards — highest priority if present in the deck

Timing Matters

  • Most impactful right after Act 1 when starter cards still dominate the deck
  • In Acts 2–3 the deck has grown and 2 removals have relatively less impact
  • Even in Act 3, refining the deck for the final boss still has meaningful value

Character Ratings

Character Rating Notes
Ironclad A Removing Strikes sharpens Strength builds; targeted removal beats self-Exhaust in reliability
Silent S Deck compression is essential for Poison builds; removing 2 Strikes dramatically speeds up cycling
Defect A Orb builds run better with fewer dead cards; removing Strikes is consistently effective
Necrobinder A Clears out non-summon cards to make key summon pieces easier to draw
Regent A Thinning the deck to reliably draw Star combo pieces is always valuable

Synergies

Card / Relic Reason
Compression-focused builds Already thinning the deck? Two more removals push precision even higher
Combo builds Specific-card combinations work better when the deck is small and parts draw reliably
Strong Power cards Power-setting builds benefit from drawing their Powers faster in a thinner deck
Shop removal combined Empty Cage + Shop removal = 4+ cards gone quickly, completing a lean deck sooner

Strategy Tips

  • Choose removals based on your build direction — removing a Strike vs. a Defend changes the deck's character
  • Offensive builds: keep the Defend, remove the Strike (make room for stronger Attacks)
  • Defensive builds: remove the Strike (increase Block Skill density)
  • If a Curse is in the deck, always remove it first — no exceptions
  • If the deck is already near-complete, other Ancient options may offer more raw power
